IIHS Removes Inflatable Boosters from Ratings

After reviewing research, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has removed inflatable boosters from its ratings. Currently there are two inflatable booster seats available, the BubbleBum and the Hiccapop UberBoost. The computer modeling research suggests that the less stiff boosters allow the 6 year old dummy to submarine under the lap belt, causing abdominal or spinal injuries. These are the types of injuries avoided by using a booster seat. Until the IIHS can determine how to categorize inflatable boosters, they are moving them to being “unrated”.
